Le Dirigeable (A day at the World’s Fair) -  2013 | 06:58

A tribute to one of the most impressive and mythical flying machines ever built: the airship. Stock footage excerpts are mixed with landscapes of invention, where architectures of the present mingle with those of the recent past. Quotes from Constructivism and Futurism ironically blend with the rhetoric of propaganda posters and statues of the 30s/50s, creating a syncretic skyline very similar to that we see in the most intriguing contemporary cities: Berlin, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Mumbai, Bangkok, Dubai, true aesthetical laboratories of the (retro)future. I also used clips from documentaries on the world’s fairs of the past century, in which the public was offered an ephemeral but amazingly realistic simulation of the near future’s wonders, in an optimistic enchantment, now gone. As always in my work the idea of progress goes side by side with the representation of disaster, according to the axiom as asserted by Paul Virilio. Un omaggio a una delle macchine volanti più imponenti e mitiche mai costruite: il dirigibile. Immagini d’archivio si sfumano a paesaggi d’invenzione, dove le architetture del presente si mescolano con quelle del recente passato, citazioni da Costruttivismo, Flash Gordon e Futurismo si fondono ironicamente con la retorica dei manifesti di propaganda e delle statue degli anni Trenta-Cinquanta, creando un orizzonte sincretico molto simile a quello che si vede nelle più interessanti città contemporanee: Berlino, Buenos Aires, Mosca, Mumbai, Bangkok, Dubai, veri laboratori estetici del (retro)futuro. Ho anche usato spezzoni di documentari sulle Fiere universali dell’ultimo secolo, dove al pubblico venivano offerte simulazioni effimere ma incredibilmente realistiche delle meraviglie del futuro prossimo, in una fascinazione ottimista, ormai svanita. Come sempre nel mio lavoro, l’idea di progresso va di pari passo alla rappresentazione del disastro, secondo l’assioma enunciato da Paul Virilio.
