n addition to scoring the music, Passarella also wrote the lyrics (terse metrical structure, basic rhyming, visionary language from the texts of the aforementioned musicians), and worked on the images, creating for each piece a poetic and visual counterpart.
He is not interested, however, in performing an operation that harks back nostalgically to the past or in carrying out a technological archaeology work but, rather, in reflecting on the deep sense of the clear and definite sinking/collapse/decline/decadence/downfall/demise (in a word, Untergang) of a historic era characterized by the combination of an abiding European romantic heritage with the post-war industrialism and the contemporary omnipresence of technology. The strength of the project conceived by Passarella is the objective and crude evidence whereby the artist depicts the ideological and cultural deepening crisis that Western societies and Europe in particular are currently experiencing. The economicist drift whose current interpretive frameworks cause the crisis, according to Passarella should give way to new categories of thought, starting from the History of mankind and of the ideas from which we can draw inspiration for a possible future (this process is called Resilience in Psychotherapy –as well as in Physics-.)

owever, the essence of the Retrophuture project is the video, conceived as a fast synthpop video clip featuring a soundtrack whose lyrics characteristically read: Art is like an old toy / a cumbrous museum piece of junk / We build in solitude/ the beat of the multitude / We create sound sculptures/ immaterial paintings / monumental minimalisms / portable conceptualisms / Visionary Art-detox / which can be carried everywhere / in a small music pod / to stimulate the brain / We are electronic (audio) Engineers / Romantic Constructivists / We are electronic (music) designers / Oxymoronic Retro-futurist.
The video includes historical clips downloaded from the Internet and then edited: among others, documentary films on Mao’s Red Guards, on the Hitler’s Pimpfe, the Red Army choir and dance ensemble, Carmen Miranda, Rudolph Valentino, tango dancers, a rare video on the The Monument to the Third International by Tatlin, the Lichtskhatedrale from the Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will) film made by Leni Riefenstahl, on the utopian urban plans of Stalin’s Russia and on Speer’s model planned for the new Berlin. The protagonist is the actor Michael Rennie who starred in the movie The day the Earth stood still, the archetype of the retro-futuristic spirit of the scientist who neutralizes (manipulating) the electric power (here transformed in electronic sound), and drawing on the 1980’s robotic poetics, in the robot-like and stereotyped motions realized through a primordial animation.
Thus, the exhibition in the box becomes an exhibition in an art gallery featuring visual works, unique pieces mounted on aluminum, eye-catching black-and-white digital images that throw emphasis on the atmosphere where deco, retro pre- and post-war and futuristic elements are combined.
Finally, a fanzine purposely devised and realised also complements the project.

arallelamente alla musica, Passarella ha lavorato sui testi (metrica stringatissima, rime basiche, linguaggio visionario dei testi dei musicisti prima citati) e sulle immagini, creando per ogni brano musicale un corrispettivo poetico e visivo.
Il suo interesse però non era realizzare un’operazione nostalgica o di archeologia tecnologica, bensì riflettere sul senso profondo dell'evidente definitivo naufragio/tramonto/declino/decadenza/crollo/fine (in una parola, Untergang) di una fase storica caratterizzata dal connubio tra una persistente eredità romantica europea, l’industrialismo del dopoguerra e l'odierna onnipresenza della tecnologia. La potenza del progetto di Passarella risiede nella lucida e spietata evidenza con cui dipinge lo stallo ideologico e culturale che caratterizza la stagione che il mondo occidentale e l'Europa in particolare stanno vivendo. La deriva economicista cui le formule interpretative in auge costringono la crisi, per Passarella deve lasciare il passo ad altre categorie di pensiero, a partire dalla Storia degli uomini e delle idee da cui trarre ispirazione per un futuro possibile (processo che in psicoterapia –ma anche in Fisica- viene chiamato Resilienza).

a la sintesi del progetto Retrophuture è il video, concepito come un veloce videoclip synthpop, con una colonna sonora il cui testo significativamente recita: L’arte è un vecchio giocattolo / ingombrante spazzatura da museo / Noi costruiamo in solitudine / il battito della moltitudine/ Noi costruiamo sculture di suono / pitture immateriali / minimalismi monumentali / concettualismi portatili / Visionari disintossicanti artistici / che si possono portare ovunque / in un piccolo involucro musicale / per stimolare il cervello / Noi siamo Ingegneri (di musica) elettronici / Costruttivisti romantici / Noi siamo designer (di musica) elettronici / Ossimorici Retrofuturisti.
Il video anima spezzoni storici scaricati dalla rete e filtrati: tra i tanti, documentari sulle Guardie Rosse maoiste, sui Pimpf hitleriani, cori e danze dell’Armata Rossa, Carmen Miranda, Rodolfo Valentino, ballerini di tango, un raro video sul Monumento alla Terza Internazionale di Tatlin, la Lichtskhatedrale dal Triumph des Willens di Leni Riefenstahl, sulle utopie urbanistiche della Russia stalinista e sul modellino della nuova Berlino di Speer. Ne è protagonista l’attore Michel Rennie di The day the Earth stood still (Ultimatum alla terra), archetipo dello spirito retrofuturistico dello scienziato manipolatore di energia (che qui si trasforma in suono elettronico), per riprendere la poetica robotica degli anni ’80, nei movimenti a scatto e stereotipati ottenuti con un’animazione primitiva.
Ed ecco che la mostra in scatola diventa anche esibizione in galleria di opere visuali, pezzi unici montati su alluminio delle immagini realizzate digitalmente in un fascinoso bianco e nero che dà enfasi alle atmosfere dove deco, retrò pre e postbellico e futuribile si mescolano. Una fanzine appositamente ideata e realizzata completa l’intero progetto
